BOXING
Boxing is a combat sport and martial art where two participants, generally of similar weight, fight each other with their fists. Traditional western boxing traces its roots to Great Brittain.
Fighting with fists is first evidenced in fist-fighting contests first appearing on ancient Sumerian, Egyptian, and Minoan reliefs. The ancient Greeks provide us our first historical records of boxing as a formal sport with a codified set of rules and staged tournaments with professionals. Boxing was also accepted as a sport with its acceptance as an Olympic game as early as 688 BC. Modern boxing since then primarily evolved in Europe.
Boxing is in principle a sport more than a martial art. Though when it comes to punching technique and power, there are few martial arts that are as focused on fist strikes as is boxing, which makes boxers formidable opponents in mixed martial arts competitions or on the street, for that matter.
In some countries with their own fighting sports, the sport is often referred to as "English Boxing". However, Muay Thai possesses similar skills in Thailand with Thai boxing, for example. There are numerous different styles of boxing practiced around the world. However, boxing does not allow kicks like most martial arts.
In both amateur boxing and professional boxing, the bouts are heavily regulated. Boxing is supervised by a referee and is typically engaged in during a series of three-minute intervals called rounds. Opponents wear heavy gloves and can achieve victory by knocking down an opponent who is unable to get up before the referee counts to ten seconds; if the opponent is deemed too injured to continue with a Technical Knockout; or by a decision of the judges if no stoppage of the fight occurs before the end of rounds.
Striking techniques of boxing include the jab, the cross, the hook, and the uppercut.
World famous fighters dating back to Jack Dempsey and later to champions including Muhammed Ali, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, and many others keep this art as important contributor to the sports lexicon.
